Middle School Transformation
Background
During the 2008-2009 school year, Stamford Public Schools established a Middle School Think Tank to create recommendations for the future of middle school education in our district. This group was comprised of parents, teachers, students and administrators. The group read research, visited schools in SPS and beyond, and spent much time and thought determining what Stamford’s middle schools should look like in the 21st century. The group’s recommendations support one key idea: Our middle schools must challenge, engage, and support each and every child so he/she enters 9th grade ready to pursue a rigorous high school course of studies and, ultimately, graduate ready for college.
Goal
The goal of the Middle School Transformation initiative is to provide a curriculum that is rigorous and standards-based for all students; establish organizational structures that are flexible and that identify, recognize, and advance the strengths of all students; and provide administrators and teachers research-based instructional strategies to meet the needs of all students in the classroom.
