T he following is a listing of activities for Black History Month: Davenport "African Experience Through Music, Art, and Dance" -- continuous event Daily trivia question during morning announcements -- students find answer and report for afternoon announcements Kindergarten – Discussing African American astronauts while studying planets Grade 1 -- Unit on struggles and successes of African Americans (books to include: Show Way, Visiting Langston, Coming on Home Soon, Follow the Drinking Gourd, Tar Beach, Aunt Harriet's Underground Railroad in the Sky) Grade 2 -- African American biography book reports, Black inventors enrichment series, time lines based on influential black Americans, study Follow the Drinking Gourd for heritage Grade 3 -- Focus on black literature, developed CMT reviews based on Follow the Drinking Gourd and Let's Learn about Black History Grade 4 -- Read biographies on black Americans, tie literature into CMT reviews Grade 5 -- African American biography book reports, cooperative group research on important contributions of African Americans, worksheet activities such as crossword puzzles and word searches, wrote stories based on Martin Luther King Jr., developed CMT reviews based on various readings ESL -- Studied African stories and folktales, African music, African culture, and created CMT reviews that align with the literature strands for each grade level New Arrivals -- Vocabulary unit, time lines, calendar of events, literature, translations Media -- African folktales, slide show of African animals

Cityscapes (Inspired by Romare Bearden's collage work, Summer Time and The Block) Pastel drawings of African masks in the art hallway Newfield Picture-That Art Exhibition 5th graders in Ms. Hicks’s class choose biographies to read; they then write expository reports or make timelines; in addition, they write Bio-Poems to be displayed and present “personality bags” with 5 items significant to their chosen individuals. Books during Read Aloud We Dream of a World. Talent lessons-How might the world be different if Martin Luther King Jr. were still alive? What dreams do you have for a brighter tomorrow? Movie- My Friend Martin Grades 1, 2: George Washington Carver, Venn diagram comparing Harriet Tubman and Rosa Parks. Read Aloud- Frederick Douglass Students create newspaper article about why slavery is wrong. Famous People unit in Social Studies (includes Black Americans) Read True Story About Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.; make a mini book with class discussion. Kindergarten: Teachers use a variety of literature books to provide background information about famous Black Americans: e.g., Rosa Parks, George Washington Carver, Dr. Martin Luther King. African Folk Tales used in Social Studies classes, telling personally relevant stories. (Writing activities and art projects will extend this learning and discussion at home encouraged.)
