Sandra Carlton, 2008-2009 Teacher of the Year

Dr. Constance Stevenson, Assistant Principal, Northeast School, said about our 2008-2009 Teacher of the Year, Sandra Carlton, “Once in an administrator’s career, you come across a classroom teacher who exemplifies the qualities of a ‘Teacher of the Year,’ every year she spends in the classroom. Sandra is such a person.” Indeed, the multi-faceted, multi-talented Mrs. Carlton has left an indelible impression on the education profession, practicing her craft as a third grade teacher at Northeast Elementary School.

Sandra uses her educational acumen to plan and design lessons that are not only standards-based, but also thought-provoking, fun, and thoroughly engaging. Since differentiated instruction is one of her many strong suits, Sandra was named the Differentiated Instruction Coach at Northeast. Some of her responsibilities include assisting her peers with this discipline, and many teachers in her building use their off-schedule time to observe her teaching in differentiated styles.

Possessing an infectious, effervescent personality and disposition, Sandra always makes everyone around her feel good. Altruism is one of her most salient gifts, always putting the needs of her students first. The creative side of Sandra is demonstrated through the many dramatic and musical programs she has fostered while at Northeast.

Sandra Carlton is truly an exemplary educator. She is the epitome of a Master Teacher who exhibits a fervent commitment to excellence. Sandra articulates and facilitates a clear and positive vision for our profession, and Stamford is proud to call her our Teacher of the Year for 2008-2009.
